Intimidating and elusive, Sylvester allows few people to see beyond his savage exterior. He communicates mostly nonverbally or with growls, snarls, and hisses. When he does speak, his voice is deep and hoarse. It is only natural that he fares better with animals rather than people. Cats are his preferred companions, as he grew up alongside a feral cat colony. He enjoys caring for local stray populations.

His personality, on the outside, might appear as nothing more than that of a vicious beast wearing human skin. After all, his first reaction to a stranger's glance is typically to bare his teeth. And that is to say nothing of his willingness to resort to violence. In reality, he is dutiful and loyal with a capacity for tenderness. He craves physical affection from Kiryu, even if he despises touch otherwise. He loves the ocean and soft plushies.

Sylvester is also fraught with anxiety. Having grown up in Satellite, he feels that everyone is out to get him. Others can sense that he is not human, so they often react to him with fear, revulsion, or violence. Later, his anxieties extend to Kiryu. He feels constant fear of losing him and grows panicked if they are separated for too long.

Even as a child, Sylvester felt out of place amongst humans. Additionally, his body caused him significant psychological distress. It was not until being resurrected as a Dark Signer that he learned the reason why. He is actually the duel spirit of the lost Water Attribute Signer Dragon. His soul was forcibly inserted into a human vessel after the human inside it died. He was brought back in this way in the hopes of eventually returning him to his proper draconic form. Then, he would fight against the Signers as he did thousands of years ago.

As a Dark Signer, he is given a card of a severely degraded version of his dragon self. When summoned in a duel, he can swap his consciousness between it and his human body. With practice, he is able to control both bodies at once. He maintains this ability as well as his card even after resurrection. Even without Dark Signer powers, the dragon body becomes corporeal and able to inflict real damage when under his control. He feels pain if it is destroyed during the duel, as well as if the card itself is physically damaged. It is likely that if the card is destroyed, he will die.

Relationships

Romantic

Kyosuke Kiryu:

Kiryu is Sylvester's earliest friend. They met as children while Kiryu fled an extremely abusive situation. Neither of them spoke a word to each other at first, but Kiryu gradually earned Sylvester's trust with offerings of food and supplies. Sylvester, on the other hand, supplied protection with his offputting and intimidating presence. Kiryu would later develop obsessive romantic feelings for him after Sylvester brutally killed one of his abusers. Sylvester initially did not reciporicate.

As a teenager, Sylvester acted as a scout for Kiryu's duel gang. This was largely kept secret from Yusei, Jack, and Crow, who knew little of his identity. He provided information on rival gangs and various scavenged items. In exchange, Kiryu promised any Team Satisfaction controlled territory would be safe for him to live in. It was during this period that Sylvester began experiencing romantic feelings for Kiryu, though he could not understand how to react to them. He believed Kiryu to be the only good human in existence, while Kiryu believed Sylvester was the only person who could fully understand him.

Sylvester remained faithfully by Kiryu's side during his mental decline, even after the rest of his team abandoned him. He assisted him in gathering resources for his attack on Security. Before Kiryu left for the final time, Sylvester allowed him to kiss him at last. Sylvester realized he craved intimacy with Kiryu, but it was too late.

They later reunited as Dark Signers, becoming officially romantically involved.

After being properly resurrected, Sylvester traveled alongside Kiryu. He could not bear to be separated from him again, even if it meant having to watch him die. This period marked a tense and fragile time in their relationship.

After the events of Crash Town, the pair resides in the newly-renamed Satisfaction Town together. They never legally marry, but their relationship is obvious.

Platonic

Aki Izayoi

Sylvester does not meet Aki until he is pitted against her and Yusei during the Signer War. She and Yusei attempted to get through to him during their duel, but he was too blinded by grief and rage for their words to reach him. However, Sylvester's relationship with his nonhumanity and monstrousness resonated with Aki. After the duel concluded, she wished they could have met under different circumstances.

They do not interact again until after the events of Crash Town. Sylvester was apprehensive of Aki at first, especially considering how they first met. He soon realized they had a few experiences in common. They bonded over feelings of monstrousness and their experiences with society rejecting them.

As friends, Sylvester and Aki make a fearsome duo. Aki's psychic abilities allow Sylvester to manifest his dragon body outside of duels. While Aki mostly does it for practice and Sylvester's sake, the two sometimes team up to give someone messing with them a scare.
